Howard McIntyre is a former principal in Kent County, Maryland. He began his career in Baltimore County as a teacher of mathematics and science and retired in 1993 as the Director of Staff Development for the Calvert County Public Schools. McIntyre began his retirement years as an education consultant. Two years later he was sure that he had made the right decision about retirement. Kayaking, birding, photography and volunteer work became his passion. He has logged over 4,000 volunteer hours at Eastern Neck and Black Water National Wildlife Refuges and additional hours as a board of directors member for the Kent County Adult Medical Day Care Center. McIntyre has paddled most of the rivers, ponds and bays of the Eastern Shore of Maryland. He has birded many areas of the Delmarva Peninsula, Ohio River Valley, Pacific Northwest, New England and Nova Scotia. His photography was featured in an exhibit in Chestertown, Maryland in 2007. His photography and poetry are displayed and sold at the Rock Hall Gallery in Rock Hall, Maryland. After taking The Pleasure of Poetry course offered in the Life Long Learning Program at Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland, Howard's creative juices were flowing. Since this awakening in 2004 he has written over 400 poems. McIntyre has shared his poetry via readings at the Prince Theatre, Play it Again Sam, Andy's in Chestertown and The Mainstay in Rock Hall, Maryland. He has also worked with students through the Poet in Residency Program. The themes of Howard's poetry and photography vary widely. |
